What does a typical Tarot deck consist of?
Tarot reading like most other New Age beliefs relies more on intuitive feelings than on ay scientific explanation. This is what makes finding the perfect deck the most difficult task in Tarot reading. One needs to find a deck that 'speaks out' to one. With the wide variety of decks available its possible you may need to go through several before you find the 'right' one.
While there is a wide variety of decks available that use different symbols, they all represent the same things. A typical tarot deck consists of 78 cards, divided into the Major and Minor Arcanas.
Vibrational Mastery: The Definitive Guide to Master Numbers & Karmic Debt
I. The Philosophy of the Major Arcana
To understand the Tarot, one must first understand that the 22 cards of the Major Arcana are not random. They represent "The Fool's Journey," a narrative sequence where the Fool (Card 0) travels through life's trials, meeting mentors, facing challenges, and eventually achieving spiritual integration. This journey reflects the universal human experience, making the Tarot a psychological mirror for self-discovery.
II. Detailed Analysis: The First Cycle (Development of the Ego)
0. The Fool: Pure Potential
The journey begins with Card 0, the only card in the Major Arcana that is not numbered in a fixed position in some traditions. The Fool represents the soul before birth or the child before socialization. He stands at the edge of a cliff, looking up at the sky, representing blind faith and the beginning of a new cycle. In a reading, The Fool suggests a time of leap-of-faith decisions and the need to trust the universe.
1. The Magician: Conscious Intent
While the Fool is potential, the Magician is action. He represents the ability to bridge the gap between heaven and earth. On his table are the four suits of the Minor Arcana - Cups, Swords, Pentacles, and Wands - showing that he has all the tools necessary to manifest his will in the physical world.
III. The Second Cycle: Facing the Subconscious
As the Fool moves into the second cycle (Strength through Temperance), he begins to move away from societal roles and starts looking inward. This is the realm of the subconscious and moral development.
13. Death: The Great Transition
Perhaps the most misunderstood card in the deck, Death rarely signifies physical passing. Instead, it represents the absolute end of a cycle. Without the clearing of the old, there can be no room for the new. It is the card of transformation and the shedding of the ego.
IV. The Third Cycle: Spiritual Enlightenment
The final cards (The Devil through The World) represent the struggle with material bondage and the eventual return to the Divine. Here, the Fool learns to see through the illusions of the world to find ultimate truth.
